the best thing…was not on the menu!
Everyone assumes the hardest part of working out is the workout.
It isn't.
It's deciding what to eat before or afterward.
Half the time you're trying to convince yourself that a protein shake counts as lunch. The other half you're one Uber Eats notification away from undoing forty-five minutes of a Cardio 360 workout!
For a long time, I assumed those were the only two options.
Then I found Broken Coconut… or better yet it found me.
Tucked inside Equinox Hudson Yards, it's become the place I accidentally compare every other "healthy" lunch to. Not because it's trying to reinvent wellness, but because it quietly understands something most places don't:
Healthy food should still taste like someone wanted you to enjoy it.
The first time I walked in, I had no idea what to order.
The Summer Salad ❤️
So I asked the man behind the bar, Brandon.
Without even thinking he said, "My faviorite’s the summer the Summer Salad and I usually get it with the herb-marinated chicken."
I've learned that's the kind of recommendation you don't argue with.
He was right.
The Summer Salad has become my default order. Crisp romaine, grilled corn, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, black sesame, and a lemon basil vinaigrette that somehow tastes bright without trying too hard. Add the chicken, and it's one of those rare lunches that leaves you feeling full, energized, and not immediately looking for a snack.
Eventually….. I did branch out. Today, I tried the harvest bowl with the same chicken. Perfect.
If the Summer Salad feels like summer in a bowl, the Harvest Bowl feels like comfort after a long day. Warm, hearty, and satisfying without crossing into heavy. And thats the key, because if its a workout day the last thing I want to feel is too full, or too bloated.
The menu, in general, is exactly the right size. Salads. Bowls. Smoothies. Coffee. Fresh juices. Cocktails if you're spending the afternoon by the pool. Nothing feels like filler.
But somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn't just returning for the food.
I've asked if they had a phone charger when mine was dying. Someone found one without hesitation. I've watched regulars get greeted by name. I've stayed longer than I planned because no one ever makes you feel rushed.
Brandon was simply the first person I met, but I've come to realize he's more of a reflection of Broken Coconut than an exception to it.
And in a city where everything can feel transactional, that's surprisingly memorable.
Which brings me back to the title.
The best thing I've found at Broken Coconut wasn't technically on the menu.
It was the hospitality.
Before you ask...
Broken Coconut is located inside Equinox Hudson Yards. The easiest way to visit is with an Equinox membership, but you can also access it by purchasing a day pass (typically around $100 during the summer) or by booking a spa treatment, which includes access to the club for the day. My rec: book a spa day and enjoy access to everything else it has to offer including the Broken Coconut.
